husband, I will get my peaceful family back. But before that I learned that my husband is getting prepared to marry again. To implement his plan, I was sent to my parents’ home”. With extreme sadness visible in her eyes, she paused a little. Sharmin’s father passed away long ago. After she was sent home by her husband, she started living with her mother. But the situation was becoming more difficult day by day. She finally decided to go abroad to change her fate and for a better future. Sharmin managed to get a passport and migrated to Saudi Arabia as a domestic help. Her employer and owner of the house was initially really nice to her. He always made sure her salary was received on time and good food was provided as well. There was no extra load of work either. “After a year when I wanted to contact my sons, I was prevented from doing so by my husband Anwar. When I went to Saudi Arabia my husband left my beloved children to the orphanage. Can you imagine? My sons became orphans despite having their parents alive.” she broke down after saying these lines. Sharmin used to send money for her two children through her mother’s bank account. At first she used to get BDT 16,000 but later it was increased to BDT 20,000. However, after her visa expired when her employer asker her to stay longer, she declined. After this refusal to stay, her employer started torturing her mentally and physically. Sometimes, he would not let her have food and necessary clothing. She was even forced to do extra work without payment. Sharmin got to know that her husband has finally married again discreetly and never contacted their sons. “I begged and pleaded to my employer to let me come to Bangladesh. I even promised that I will be back to the same house after 3 months. Eventually he agreed to let me go but did not pay the salary for the last 3 months of work. Even my clothes, cosmetics and daily necessities were seized by my employer. I was wandering here and there to figure out the way to return home and asked for assistance from the Probashi Kallyan Desk. After listening to my story, they referred me to a migrant support centre at Dakkhinkhan. I came to Bangladesh on 30 June 2021 completely empty handed. the migrant support centre helped me a lot by making arrangements for my travel towards home and also in finding my family.” She looked at the sky after finishing the sentence. A sense of relief could be seen for the first time in her face. At the moment, Sharmin is residing with her aunt as there is shortage of space at her mother's home. She saved money in her account and wanted to start income generating activity. “I want to build a small house where I can live with my mother. I planned to start a business if I had gotten any aid and after the migrant supporet centre supported me by providing a sewing machine I could see hope. I believe I can finally make my dream come true. I will forever be grateful.” said Sharmin with a slight smile. 12
