GFMD Side Event: Non-Payment of Wages and Benefits: Impacts on the Life of Migrants and their Families Post-COVID-19
- Source
- GFMD
- Abstract
- Description: Migrants have faced enormous challenges this year due to the closure of businesses amid lockdowns. Many migrant workers have faced termination, with employers unable or unwilling to provide earned wages and end-of-service benefits. Some of these workers have also been repatriated without the means to seek redress for grievances related to non-payment of wages. While the non-payment of wages is not a new issue, it is one that has been aggravated by the economic situation faced by many countries, with existing justice systems unable to handle the increase in cases. While recognising the magnitude of the issue, this event will provide an avenue for an interactive exchange between stakeholders present and touch upon what has been done, and what remains to be done. It will identify and assess policies, measures and initiatives taken by governments to address the issue, as well as the gaps and challenges that continue to await remedy.

In November last year, dozens of Bangladeshi female workers sent a video message from Saudi Arabia pleading for help and asking to be rescued. Social advocacy groups are calling on the government to protect its workers abroad, including by increasing oversight over its own recruiting agents, offering protection for its workers in host countries, and aiding workers in distress. Launch of Analysis Report: “Crying Out for Justice: Wage Theft Against Migrant Workers During COVID-19”
- Source
- Migrant Forum in Asia
- Abstract
- Upon the launch of the Justice for Wage Theft campaign in June 2020, Migrant Forum in Asia (MFA), together with our members and partners, started actively documenting cases of wage theft experienced by migrant workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. The documentation process aims to provide evidence on the gravity of the issue as well as to strengthen our evidence-based advocacy around the issue of wage theft. From the period of June to December 2020, we were able to file 700 cases in our online documentation system. These cases consist of both individual and group cases, amounting to approximately 1000+ cases of wage theft experienced by migrant workers at the height of the global pandemic in the region. In this regard, we have come out with an analysis of these cases in our report, "Crying Out for Justice: Wage Theft Against Migrant Workers During COVID-19". We would like to invite you to the launch of the analysis report on 07 April 2021 (Wednesday) at 8:00PM-9:30PM Manila time (GMT+8). To join the launch, please register via this link: https://bit.ly/3fvoUFY You may find here the tentative program agenda for your reference: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1w1qHtH2OV8hsmxkEAQE8NMDXIOkZgX_E/view?usp=sharing Please feel free to circulate the poster and program agenda to your network and invite your colleagues to the launch.
