I was not even allowed to speak to my family members.” After persuading her in different ways, she started to tell her story. “My life was changed drastically when my husband passed away. For a better future for my children I decided to go to Saudi Arabia. I have a 15 year old daughter and a 10 year old son whom I left with my mother before going abroad. After much struggle I managed to go to Saudi Arabia as a housekeeper in 2020 through a middleman” said Rashma in a weak voice. At first everything was going alright for her, although for the first 6 months of work she received her wages irregularly. All of her income was spent on accommodation and for her children in Bangladesh. “I wished to save my earnings and start a small business after coming to Bangladesh. Unfortunately I contracted jaundice and my employer abandoned me at the hospital. Since then he has not contacted me. After staying at the hospital for 5 days I was sent to Bangladesh without salary, bonus and my belongings.” Rashma is currently physically ill and requires long term medical attention. Her son is deaf due to infection in his ear, as a result no one gives him work. Even her daughter cannot work as she has to take care of her mother. Although they live in a rented house, Rashma has not been able to pay a single month’s rent so far. Sometimes they even have to starve for days. In this situation it was extremely difficult for them to bear Rashma’s medical expenses. “I used to cry lying on my bed thinking of how I will be able to manage this situation. That is when I was offered financial aid. They listened to my life story and considered to help me by providing financial assistance to meet my medical expenses.
