“I will definitely help a migrant in need in future,” says a migrant
worker after receive support
I am Kumar, living with my wife and a two-year-old female child in Kobalapuram, a rural village in
Cuddalore district. I went to Singapore in 2019 searching for a job. I was not given the promised
job in Singapore. I was not given proper responses when I asked questions regarding my work
and salary. I was forced to work as a helper in an iron- supplying company. Since I borrowed
money from money-lenders and came to Singapore, I was forced to accept the hard job given.
One day as I was working in the company, my right ear lost hearing ability due to the loud and
unbearable noise in the company. I consulted many doctors on my own but none of them gave
me hope of restoring my hearing without undergoing a surgery. The doctors recommended a
surgery in the ear as I had water blocks in the nose, which was a hindrance for my ear. But I was
not in a position to borrow money for my operation. The company did not bother anything about
the accident and gave nothing in compensation. Adding to the agony, I lost my job due to Covid19 and I returned to Tamil Nadu.
I was helpless after returning to Tamil Nadu and I did not find any means to support my family. I
could not get any job in my village because of my inability to hear and the acute pain in my ear. I
was completely shattered and lost my hope of supporting my family to lead a decent life and
educating my daughter. I did not really believe that I would regain my hearing until I was helped
with a new hearing-aid and finance for medical tests from the generous people of organizations,
who genuinely supported me and gave my family a hope-filled future. I feel grateful to them for
their great support. Because of the hearing-aid, I am now able to hear well and feel confident of
taking care of my family. With my hearing restored, I was able to go back to Singapore and take
up a job. I feel greatly blessed and feel that I am the luckiest person in the world. Because of the
help I received, I am able to survive and take care of my wife and daughter. Likewise, I will
definitely help a migrant in need in future.
