Bangladeshi migrants: exploitation, abuse in Brunei
Against those companies, 34 cases were lodged with the Bangladesh mission and 24 cases were filed in different police
stations in Brunei by the Bangladeshi victims, the letter says.
On June 23, 2021, Bangladesh High Commissioner in Brunei Nahida Rahman Shumona wrote to Home Ministry and
expatriates’ welfare and overseas employment ministry and requested them to take immediate action against the alleged
human traffickers under The Prevention and Suppression of Human Trafficking Act 2021.
When contacted, Bangladesh Civil Society for Migrants (BCSM) co-chair Syed Saiful Haque told Business Insider
Bangladesh that Bangladeshi migrant workers often fell victims to exploitations and wage theft in many countries
including Brunei and Saudi Arabia.
For Brunei cases, he suggested the Bangladesh government take bilateral steps to solve the issues with the recipient
country. Alongside, Saiful Haque, also chairman of WARBE Development Foundation suggested Bangladesh authorities
raise such “incidents before multilateral forums.”
According to the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET), Brunei started recruiting workers from
Bangladesh in 1992. Over 75,000 Bangladeshi workers have so far gone to work in the country, the data showed.
