Tales of abuse as Bangladeshi female workers return from the Gulf

Rights groups say thousands of migrant workers in Gulf countries, mostly working as domestic help, are at risk of bad working conditions and physical and sexual assault. In November last year, dozens of Bangladeshi female workers sent a video message from Saudi Arabia pleading for help and asking to be rescued. Social advocacy groups are calling on the government to protect its workers abroad, including by increasing oversight over its own recruiting agents, offering protection for its workers in host countries, and aiding workers in distress. New fund to support migrant workers in Singapore

The Straits Time
Abstract
Leap201 Singapore set up, Leap for Migrant Workers (L4M) a new fund dedicated to migrants both during and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic. The fund looks into supporting migrants where they are most vulnerable in terms of low economic security and low health security, from living in migrant worker dormitories. Singapore committed $1M and will work closely with migrant worker organizations in supporting migrants.

For immediate release/ Manila, 30 June 2021 — Migrant Forum in Asia (MFA) members and partners have together launched the second volume of the bi-annual analysis report, “Crying Out for Justice: Wage Theft Against Migrant Workers during COVID-19” which documents cases of wage theft from the period of January and May 2021. The report marks the first anniversary of the Justice for Wage Theft campaign. A joint effort by a large coalition of trade unions and civil society organisations inaugurated on 1 June 2020, the campaign calls for an urgent justice mechanism for migrant workers repatriated due to the COVID-19 pandemic without being paid their due wages, salaries, and end-of-service benefits. More than a year after the pandemic, up to millions of migrant workers are still anxiously waiting for their wages, as there has been hardly any progress with respect to access to justice.

Description: Migrants have faced enormous challenges this year due to the closure of businesses amid lockdowns. Many migrant workers have faced termination, with employers unable or unwilling to provide earned wages and end-of-service benefits. Some of these workers have also been repatriated without the means to seek redress for grievances related to non-payment of wages. While the non-payment of wages is not a new issue, it is one that has been aggravated by the economic situation faced by many countries, with existing justice systems unable to handle the increase in cases. While recognising the magnitude of the issue, this event will provide an avenue for an interactive exchange between stakeholders present and touch upon what has been done, and what remains to be done. It will identify and assess policies, measures and initiatives taken by governments to address the issue, as well as the gaps and challenges that continue to await remedy.
