Wage Theft Documentation Workshop 📆 14 December 2021 ⏰ 4PM MANILA As part of the Migrants' Month Calendar of Activities as well as a network-building and capacity-building initiative, the Justice for Wage Theft campaign will be facilitating a workshop for advocates on documenting cases of wage theft experienced by migrant workers, through the JFWT documentation system. The workshop aims to further build the evidence-based advocacy of the JFWT campaign. Documenters and case handlers from the Justice for Wage Theft campaign who have played a key role in building the campaign’s database of wage theft cases and development of the campaign’s analysis reports will be speaking to share their process, best practices, as well as challenges in documenting cases of wage theft reported by migrant workers. The report is a comparative analysis of labour law changes across Asia and highlights the commonalities across these nations. It highlights what has been changed in the laws and why it is important. These industry-backed labour reforms have reduced workers’ power, increased informality, lowered minimum wages, undermined strikes and sectoral bargaining, and further restricted labour consultation.

‘I Will Fight for Compensation’

Abstract
An Indian woman tailor in UAE who was injured in a road accident and repatriated in a wheelchair has moved papers to fight a compensation case. On September 19, 2019, Anitha Kumary, a 51-year-old Indian woman tailor, was hit by a car in Abu Dhabi. She suffered a severe head injury and lost consciousness. She was rushed to the Acute Emergency section of Sheikh Khalifa Medical City. She was put in the Intensive Care Unit for five days and when medics found some progress, she was moved to the monitored bed. Finally, she was discharged on October 6. Even at the time of discharge, she wasn’t able to stand independently or sit without support. And on a wheelchair, she was repatriated to India on October 15.

Description: Migrants have faced enormous challenges this year due to the closure of businesses amid lockdowns. Many migrant workers have faced termination, with employers unable or unwilling to provide earned wages and end-of-service benefits. Some of these workers have also been repatriated without the means to seek redress for grievances related to non-payment of wages. While the non-payment of wages is not a new issue, it is one that has been aggravated by the economic situation faced by many countries, with existing justice systems unable to handle the increase in cases. While recognising the magnitude of the issue, this event will provide an avenue for an interactive exchange between stakeholders present and touch upon what has been done, and what remains to be done. It will identify and assess policies, measures and initiatives taken by governments to address the issue, as well as the gaps and challenges that continue to await remedy.

For immediate release/ Manila, 30 June 2021 — Migrant Forum in Asia (MFA) members and partners have together launched the second volume of the bi-annual analysis report, “Crying Out for Justice: Wage Theft Against Migrant Workers during COVID-19” which documents cases of wage theft from the period of January and May 2021. The report marks the first anniversary of the Justice for Wage Theft campaign. A joint effort by a large coalition of trade unions and civil society organisations inaugurated on 1 June 2020, the campaign calls for an urgent justice mechanism for migrant workers repatriated due to the COVID-19 pandemic without being paid their due wages, salaries, and end-of-service benefits. More than a year after the pandemic, up to millions of migrant workers are still anxiously waiting for their wages, as there has been hardly any progress with respect to access to justice.

Abstract
In celebration of International Migrants Day, accounts of wage theft were collected by MFA members and partners and gathered to share the different journeys of each migrant worker who faced injustice and how they navigated through it. These are stories of justice delayed and of the need for reforms in our justice systems. Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility (ICCR), a coalition of long-term institutional investors representing $2 trillion USD in assets under management, formally endorses the MFA's Call for an Urgent Justice Mechanism for Repatriated Migrant Workers. The ICCR recognizes numerous retailers and manufacturers in all sectors avoiding liability for systemic abuse in the past which has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. ICCR urges companies to implement human rights due diligence in their supply chains during and following the COVID-19 crisis and call on companies and investors to support MFA’s Justice for Wage Theft campaign.

New fund to support migrant workers in Singapore

Leap201 Singapore set up, Leap for Migrant Workers (L4M) a new fund dedicated to migrants both during and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic. The fund looks into supporting migrants where they are most vulnerable in terms of low economic security and low health security, from living in migrant worker dormitories. Singapore committed $1M and will work closely with migrant worker organizations in supporting migrants.

Tales of abuse as Bangladeshi female workers return from the Gulf

Rights groups say thousands of migrant workers in Gulf countries, mostly working as domestic help, are at risk of bad working conditions and physical and sexual assault. In November last year, dozens of Bangladeshi female workers sent a video message from Saudi Arabia pleading for help and asking to be rescued. CALL FOR ENTRIES #JusticeForWageTheft Poster Competition

Abstract
Migrant Forum in Asia (MFA), together with the Cross-Regional Center for Migrants and Refugees (CCRM) and the Civil Society Action Committee (AC), is organizing the #JusticeForWageTheft Poster Competition as part of the Justice for Wage Theft Campaign. The competition aims to raise awareness and visibility on the issue of wage theft experienced by migrant workers who have been forced out of their jobs, forced to go on unpaid leave without being given their earned wages, salaries, and benefits, and forced to return home into situations of debt bondage. THEME OF THE COMPETITION: Wage theft against migrant workers and all related issues such as non-payment of wages and end of service benefits, forced unpaid leave or reduced wages, and lack of efficient and just redress mechanisms. The competition is open internationally. All artists aged 18 and above are qualified to apply and submit an entry. A regional winner will be determined for all six regions across the globe while a global winner will be chosen from the regional winners and will be determined through a panel of judges and via online voting. The selected entries for both the regional and global level will win a cash prize. The webinar is in collaboration with the government of Switzerland and United Kingdom. It will be held on 09 December 2020 (Wednesday) at 1:00PM - 2:30PM (London) / 9:00PM - 10:30PM (Manila). The webinar will address the question of how a steady flow of remittances can be maintained by ensuring that migrant workers are compensated for their work in countries of destination. In addition, the webinar will explore what could be some of the innovative and informal ways of ensuring access to justice and compensation as a strategy to facilitate expedited remittances to families that strongly rely on them back home.
